Born in Kanazawa, he moved to Kyoto and served Prince Arisugawa 有栖川宮. He established his own style through self-study, incorporating elements of Chinese painting, including that of Shen Nanpin 沈南蘋, as well as the Kano school 狩野派 and Western painting styles.
